Welcome

Thank you for subscribing to the Storytime Standouts newsletter.  In this edition, I am happy to introduce several books and a number of printables I hope you will find helpful.

When making purchases this holiday season, please support this website by purchasing books, movies, music or other goodies through Amazon.ca or Amazon.com.

In this newsletter we are offering six printables for your use...

bullet

‘Baking Cookies’ printable featuring words and pictures.      This can be used in a variety of ways. Some children enjoy copying words using letter tiles or magnetic letters. Alternatively, children may like to copy words onto a white board or use a pencil and paper. Older children may enjoy creating stories using these words. If you wish, you can print out two sets of words and create a memory game or print one set of words, separate the pictures from the words and make a matching game.

bullet

‘Jack and Jill’ nursery rhyme printable. Sharing nursery rhymes with your child is a great way to reinforce rhyming and rhythm as well as introduce new vocabulary.  When learning nursery rhymes, your child will be introduced to characters and stories he/she will encounter again and again.  After reading a nursery rhyme, ask a beginning reader to circle the rhyming words and/or underline all the words that begin with a certain letter.  On page 2 of the PDF, a beginning reader can cut out the (rhyming) words and glue them in the right places.  Pages 3 and 4 provide an opportunity for your child to cut out the lines of the rhyme and glue them, in order, to page 3. Your child may enjoy creating his or her very own book to ‘read.’

bullet

‘Building a Snowman’ printable. Print one copy, cut apart and use it as a sequencing activity (can your child determine the correct order of events?) or, print two, cut apart and use as a matching game

bullet

‘Weather’ Word Search. For older children, a good way to introduce new vocabulary.

bullet

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas’ Crossword Puzzle. Also for older children, how well do you know Clement Moore’s famous poem?

‘Tis the Season’  Printable Alphabet.

Special Days for November

November 1st National Family Literacy Day Learning is a Family Legacy…Pass it On!”

November 11th - Remembrance Day in Canada & Veteran’s Day in the United States of America

Canadian resources include printable  colouring pages, teacher resources and a Courageous Canadians Quiz.

Entirely appropriate for children of all ages, A Poppy is to Remember is a fine introduction to Remembrance Day, the symbolism of a poppy and In Flanders Fields.

The 10th anniversary edition of In Flanders Fields is appropriate for children ages nine and up and their families.  Beautifully illustrated, we learn about the poem, the Canadian man who wrote it and the First World War.  A wonderful tribute to the fallen.

Also for older children, Across the Blue Pacific tells the story of Ted Walker who served in the United States Navy during World War II.

November 13 - 19th  - Children’s Book Week in the United States of America – A celebration of the written word, Children's Book Week introduces young people to new authors and ideas in schools, libraries, homes and bookstores.

November 14th - William Steig’s birthday. Mr. Steig was awarded the Caldecott Medal for Sylvester and the Magic Pebble in 1970. He wrote many, many notable books including Shrek! and Doctor De Soto.  For a celebration of family fun, I recommend Pete’s a Pizza
