Welcome

Happy September! I hope you had a terrific summer and wish you all the best as your various autumn back-to-school and back-to-sports activities get rolling.

I want to begin by thanking you for subscribing to the Storytime Standouts newsletter.  In this edition, I am happy to introduce several new books for older readers and a number of printables I hope you will find helpful

There are seven printables for your use...

bullet

A ‘Off to School’ printable featuring words and pictures.  This can be used in a variety of ways. Some children enjoy copying words using letter tiles or magnetic letters. Alternatively, children may like to copy words onto a white board or use a pencil and paper. Older children may enjoy creating stories using these words. If you wish, you can print out two sets of words and create a memory game or print one set of words, separate the pictures from the words and make a matching game.

An ‘Old Mother Hubbard’ nursery rhyme printable Sharing nursery rhymes with your child is a great way to reinforce rhyming and rhythm as well as introduce new vocabulary.  When learning nursery rhymes, your child will be introduced to characters and stories he/she will encounter again and again.  After reading a nursery rhyme, ask a beginning reader to circle the rhyming words and/or underline all the words that begin with a certain letter.  On page 2 of this PDF, a beginning reader can cut out the (rhyming) words and glue them in the right places.  Pages 3 and 4 provide an opportunity for your child to cut out the lines of the rhyme and glue them, in order, to page 3. Your child may enjoy creating his or her very own book to ‘read.’

October 31st

Halloween – fans of Omar will delight in this new Halloween story.  Omar can’t wait for Halloween.  He is eager to trick-or-treat in a costume that is so scary he might cause his friends to faint.  There is just one problem: Omar can’t decide which costume will fit the bill.

Finding great books for 7 – 10 year olds to enjoy can be enormously rewarding.  The initial learn–to-read phase is complete and we hope our children will chose to read for pleasure.  When, as parents, we check to see why things are so quiet and discover our children with a book, it is indeed a special ‘a-ha’ moment.

Just as reading picture books aloud is important for the very young, it is vital that mom and/or dad continues to read aloud to emergent readers. Long after your child reads independently there are books worth exploring together.  Sharing wonderful chapter books with your child(ren) will motivate them to read more challenging books.  There are marvelous fantasies, legends, and mysteries for you and your child(ren) to discover.

This summer, we have been fortunate to read and enjoy several new titles for 7 – 10 year old boys and girls...

Truly Winnie
Written by Jennifer Richard Jacobson
Illustrated by Alissa Imre Geis

Winnie, Vanessa and Zoe are off to their first overnight camp!  They’ll be away from home for two weeks – swimming, climbing, boating and making new friends.  Winnie, whose mother died after she was born, knows all too well that she is different from other girls.  When she is assigned to a tent away from her closest friends, she is forced to make new friends.   When getting to know her fellow campers, Winnie tells of her mother’s many accomplishments and before long is caught in a web of deception.

I read Truly Winnie aloud to my eight-year-old son.  When I suggested we give it a try, I thought he might resist because the main characters are all girls (imagine!)  In fact, the camp theme and compelling story made the Truly Winnie a good choice for both boys and girls. Nominated for the 2004 Rhode Island Children's Book Award and chosen by the School Library Journal for their annual Children's Curriculum, Truly Winnie offers many opportunities for discussion–

How it feels to a be a ‘third wheel”
How being away from home changes the campers, and
Why Winnie feels she must invent a mother
