Fun on the Road

Chicken Socks (Klutz) Magnetic A to Z

Twenty six magnetic letters and three steel pages enable youngsters to match initial letters to pictures (i.e. ‘C’ for cat, ‘Y’ for yoyo) and spell three letter words (i.e. web, cup) using picture clues for each letter.  Well-designed: front cover includes storage for each letter (in ABC order) and magnets ‘stick’ easily to the steel pages.

Curious George Rides a Bike

Read-Along Fun with Curious George

by H.A. Rey

This (paperback) book and compact disk package is well-suited to roadtrips, listening centres and storytime at home.  The CD features two versions of the story: with or without page-turn signals.

When the Man with the Yellow Hat presents George with a bicycle, he soon forgets the papers he has agreed to deliver.  Before long he has created a flotilla of boats.  Soon after he finds himself at the centre of an animal show. Lots of fun sound effects and music – the perfect accompaniment for George’s antics.

 Looking Ahead to Kindergarten

Oxford Fun with Reading

Part of a series of workbooks for young children, Oxford Fun with Reading provides opportunities for children to learn the alphabet, letter sounds, initial sounds, prepositions, rhyming as well as matching words.  Clearly illustrated, the workbook reviews many concepts.  Most young children will benefit from adult support before attempting new material.

New Mini Stella!

Stella Fairy of the Forest by Marie Louise Gay

Marie-Louise Gay’s books about Sam and Stella are marvelous.  Their third adventure is now available in a hardcover, mini book format (the cover is just under 6” X 6”  / 15 cm X 15 cm) that is just perfect for taking on the road or mailing in a parcel.

Stella knows just where to find fairies for Sam.  She leads him through meadows, across a stream and into a magical forest.   This story is truly lovely especially in its treatment of the siblings’ relationship. Ms. Gay’s illustrations have a special quality particularly her depictions of the delightful, luminous red-head, Stella.

For Older Children (Age 10+)

The Giant Under the Snow by John Gordan

Written 30+ years ago and recently revised and reprinted, The Giant Under the Snow is a terrific fantasy.   On a school outing, Jonk Winters sets in motion a chain of breathtaking events that place her entire community in great danger.  Together with two friends, she battles leathermen and ultimately the Green Man.  Highly recommended thriller.

Hot off the Presses

In her new book, Child’s Play: rediscovering the joy of play in our families and communities, Silken Laumann, challenges parents to reconnect with children and build safe, supportive communities.

Ms. Laumann suggests that neighbours (parents and children) get together once a week, at a neighbourhood park, to allow children opportunities to enjoy unstructured play together – ride bikes, skip, kick or throw balls, play tag, road hockey or basketball or enjoy the swings. She points out that unstructured play helps to keep children healthy, creative and active.  Enjoying the park together gives parents and neighbours opportunities to meet, talk and get to know each other.
