Last Child in the Woods Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder

Written by Richard Louv

Published by Workman Publishing

Distributed in Canada by Thomas Allen & Son

Paperback, Parenting

In Last Child in the Woods, Richard Louv asserts that contact with nature is critical in childhood (and adulthood) and that rising obesity rates in children, the increase in depression and attention problems are all tied to society’s shift away from spending time out-of-doors. Mr. Louv supports his argument with research and demands ‘nature-child’ reunion.

Written and illustrated by Mairi Hedderwick

Published by Hodder Children’s Books

Distributed in Canada by McArthur and Company

Hardcover, Ages 3+

Ms. Hedderwick is a favourite in our home, we have so enjoyed the wonderful Katie Morag picture books. In this animal story, Pa Otterley awakes one morning and announces that it is time for the family to move. He has been kept awake by a banging door and moonlight streaming through curtains. He feels certain that a new home is the solution. The Otterley family packs up and sets out in search of better accommodations. After three sleepless nights in three unsuitable locations, the grateful family discovers the perfect ‘new’ home. Beautiful watercolour illustrations add delightful details.

The Queen’s Feet

Written by Sarah Ellis, illustrated by Dušan Petričić

Published by Red Deer Press, Northern Lights Books for Children

Hardcover, Ages 4 – 8

Queen Daisy’s feet have a tendency to behave altogether differently than one might expect. They are not at all inclined to wear ‘proper’ queen shoes – sometimes gumboots or fuzzy slippers are a much better fit. The rebellion does not stop there, however. Occasionally the queen’s feet decide to kickbox, dance the hornpipe, tap dance or kick a bullying king in the ankle! This decidedly "unroyal’ behavior must be stomped out. In the end, it is decided that Queen Daisy will put her best foot forward for all but one hour each day – when her feet can "raise a ruckus and kick up a fuss!" Delightful illustrations will sweep you off your feet!

Down to the Sea with Mr. Magee

Written and illustrated by Chris Van Dusen

Published by Chronicle Books

Paperback, Ages 4 to 8

Outings with Mr. Magee and his little dog ‘Dee’ are never boring.  Plans for a relaxing day afloat go amiss when a stray whale places his blowhole directly below their small boat. Engaging illustrations and a delightful rhyming story will entertain children and adults.

Hot off the Presses

Here are some new books that are just perfect for May and June celebrations...

Mother May I?

Written by Grace Maccarone, illustrated by Melissa Sweet

Published by Scholastic Canada Ltd.

When mother and child take a trip to a mall, the child sees all sorts of appealing things he’d like to have.  In the end, he decides there is just one thing he truly wants, a hug from mother.  Rhyming text, padded covers and card stock pages make this appropriate for three to five year olds.

Bright Red Kisses

Written by Teresa Toten, art by Deirdre Betteridge

Published by Annick Press

My kiss is my promise, I promise, and then, while you dream, I’ll come home and I’ll kiss you again.”  Mommy is going out for a special evening.  With her daughter’s help she uses lotions and potions, selects a beautiful dress and slinky shoes.  Great fun for mothers and daughters, Bright Red Kisses celebrates the anticipation of a lovely evening and returning home to a sleeping child.

Tell Me a Story, Daddy

Written and illustrated by Moira Kemp

Published by Hodder Children’s Books

When Rosie asks Daddy for a bedtime story, he begins with a princess sharing tea with her teddy.  It is not long before Rosie decides to add a hungry dragon to the mix.  Rosie and Daddy exchange ideas and create a lovely adventure for the young princess, a family of dragons and a prince who arrives just in time to help. Tell Me a Story, Daddy depicts the special relationship between father and daughter and may just inspire young (and older) storytellers to begin their own story and see where the adventure takes them.

  When You Were Small

Written by Sara O’Leary, illustrated by Julie Morstad

Published by Simply Read Books

Each evening, just before he goes to bed, Henry sits with his dad.  Their evening visit always begins with Henry asking his dad to tell him what it was like when he (Henry) was ‘small.’ We soon discover Henry was not just ‘small’ when he was young, he was so tiny that he slept in a bedroom slipper, used a ruler for a toboggan and was sometimes used as a replacement for a missing chess piece! When You Were Small is told simply and concisely. The premise could be a greate springboard for imagining just what it was like when you were 'small'.
