Carolyn graduated from the University of British Columbia in May 1984 with Bachelor of Education.   She is a B.C. certified teacher, a member of the B.C. College of Teachers and a book lover.

At the present time, she offers programs for preschool-aged children through Richmond Leisure Services.  She also delivers Professional Development and Parent Education programs throughout the Lower Mainland. As well, she works as a private tutor and writes reviews of children’s books for The PPP Partner (the newsletter of the Council of Parent Participation Preschools in B.C.).

Programs for Preschool-Age Children

In early 2002 she approached two Richmond community centres with a proposal to develop and present a new program; ‘Getting Ready to Read.’  Her proposal was accepted and her programs subsequently expanded to four community centres.

Getting Ready to Read is now offered in Richmond virtually year-round.   She presents a different class almost every week of the year to groups of four and five year olds.

In Getting Ready to Read, she  emphasizes phonemic awareness, alphabet recognition, comprehension and developing a positive attitude toward books and reading

With the success of Getting Ready to Read, she began offering a companion program for older children.  Beginning to Read is intended for five and six year olds.

In Beginning to Read she focuses on the aforementioned prereading skills and also helping youngsters to sound out unfamiliar words and recognize and read high frequency words.

Programs for Adults

She offers Parent Ed. and Professional Development programs to parents and teachers of young children.

Ready for Reading is her most popular presentation - In this 75 - 90 minute workshop, we explore ways to raise children who love books, and enjoy reading. Even with very young children, parents and teachers can create a solid foundation for future reading instruction.  Participants learn the importance of reading aloud to children. Specific examples are shared (and read aloud) - some books help in the development of phonemic awareness, others provide an opportunity to gain skills in comprehension and some are just too good to miss!
