Carolyn would be delighted to
develop a workshop especially for your group. Her presentation and
handout materials can be adapted to your specific needs. Some ideas
for your consideration -
 |
Workshop #1 - Prepare Your Child to
Read
This is Carolyn’s most popular
workshop and a great place to start. In this session you will learn
fun, effective and inexpensive ways you can help your child to
 |
Notice Sounds in Words (Phonemic Awareness)
|
 |
Recognize the Alphabet
|
 |
Understand Words, Sentences, Paragraphs and Stories
|
 |
Develop a Positive Attitude Toward Books and
Reading

Workshop #2 - Winning the Reading Game
In this 75 - 90 minute
workshop, we explore ways to raise children who love books, and enjoy
reading. Even with very young children, parents can create a solid
foundation for future reading instruction.
During the workshop, we will look at
five elements of pre-reading:
-
Noticing Sounds in Words (developing phonemic awareness)
-
Alphabet Recognition
-
Understanding Words, Sentences, Paragraphs and Stories
-
Developing a Positive Attitude Toward Books and Reading
-
Great Parent
Resources and Wonderful Picture Books
Participants will learn
the importance of reading aloud to children. Specific examples will be
shared (and read aloud) - some books will help in the development of
phonemic awareness, others provide an opportunity to gain skills in
comprehension and some are just too good to miss!
In addition, participants will discover how to make their own fun
learning games to enjoy with young children. Household items will be
transformed into games that promote alphabet recognition, phonemic
awareness and comprehension.
Throughout the workshop, we will also give examples of how talking
with children while driving in the car, taking a walk or just before
saying, "Good night," will help to develop language and reading
readiness.
Winning the Reading Game is a great opportunity for participants to
have fun and discover how to support young learners.
Should you wish, I will gladly prepare a comprehensive handout
(including reading list) for copying. Also, if you prefer a 'Make and
Take' presentation (rather than a demonstration/lecture), I will
provide materials at a modest incremental cost

Workshop
#3 - Bedtime
Favourites
If you love books, this
is the workshop for you! Put yourself in a reviewer’s shoes. A
hands-on opportunity to personally check out dozens of outstanding and
newly published picture books. You will want to consider
age-appropriateness, the ‘enjoyment quotient,’ illustrations, content,
format and more. |
